Where I'm From

I am from the ballet barre on my wall
From coffee and makeup
I am from the wild growing kudzu
Sheltering an imaginary kingdom hard at play
Quiet, sweet smelling wisteria signalling summer’s arrival
I am from watermelon, small, accidentally grown in the flower bed
From cucumbers, grown in the backyard, giant, crunchy and tasting of sunshine
From irises, yellow and purple, the cause of much sneezing
From bonfires, s’mores and sleeping in tents
I am from snow skiing and hospitality
From Mattie Will and Anna Pearl
From laughter and music
From “do the right thing, at the right time, whether you want to or not.” and “SHARP KIDS!!”
I’m from candle lit Christmas Eves and Joy to the World
From Leeds and the Guthries, lemon chiffon, and riced cauliflower
From the toddler dad yelling “damn dog”
The enthusiastic child asking for “a lighter and a pair of scissors”
From an antique cedar chest filled with memories and diplomas, connecting me to a legacy built gloriously by strong women and gentle men
